Caring for God’s Acre and Shropshire Council are working together to set up a Friends of Longden Road Cemetery group. A successful public meeting at the cemetery, attended by over seventy Shrewsbury residents has inspired the two organisations to set up the new Friends group.
Harriet Carty from Caring for God’s Acre said “Membership of the Friends group is open to anyone with an interest in the conservation of this interesting site, which is important as the last resting place of many Shrewsbury residents including the author Mary Webb.” “Longden Road cemetery is a haven for wildflowers and grassland fungi, and the memorials are of architectural interest - all of this is worthy of conservation” Harriet added.
The Friends groups, once established, will be looking to plan special events, carry out practical conservation tasks, investigate local history and record monument inscriptions.
Please come along to find out what is going on and to see if you would like to be involved. The inaugural meeting is Monday 24th November at 2pm in the chapel at Longden Road Cemetery. There is parking on the site.
