Cherishing Churchyards Week


‘Learn simple ways to create a haven for wildlife, for heritage, for people.’

Places are still available for 'The Beautiful Burial Ground' conference, a one-day event organised by the charity Caring for God’s Acre (CfGA) at Croxteth Hall in Liverpool on Wednesday 13th April from 10am to 4.15pm.

Anyone involved with or interested in the care and conservation of church and chapel yards, cemeteries, crematoria and green burial grounds is invited to attend. This could be burial site managers, volunteers, people from parishes and congregations, naturalists, historians, educationalists and community workers.

Dr Harold Mytum of Liverpool University, will speak about the conservation of  monuments and memorials.  Lancashire Wildlife Trust worker Ben Hargreaves will lead an outdoor workshop on simple wildlife recording in burial grounds.

Paul Senar, Trustee of Friends of AnfieldCemetery and Kate Kendall of Historic England are running a discussion workshop entitled ‘Love Your Cemetery’ to share ideas about a new cemetery initiative to inspire interest in the conservation and community use of these green spaces.

CfGA workers are running workshops on care of burial site grassland for conservation and raising funds and recruiting volunteers to support burial site care and conservation. A variety of displays from conservation organisations will be on show.

Sue Cooper, the manager of Caring for God’s Acre, said ‘This special event is for absolutely anyone interested in the wonderful heritage of burial sites who cares about the way they are managed’.

Places are limited on the conference and booking is essential. The cost is £15 to include lunch and refreshments.
