The Beautiful Burial Ground

Cherishing Churchyards Week

cherishlogo-week-green-206x300Saturday 9th June – Sun 17th June 2018

Join us for a special week to celebrate churchyards and burial grounds and to raise awareness of the treasures they contain.

Churchyards are special places:

  • They often contain a rich diversity of plant and animal life.
  • They are important places for archaeology and history.
  • They often have distinctive and veteran trees.
  • The stonework and boundary walls provide a home for a mosaic of mosses, ferns and lichens.
  • They provide a tranquil place for quiet reflection.
  • They are a resource for inspiration and community learning.

Churchyards are often within walking distance of local communities and can provide a focus for community involvement.

Are you interested in celebrating your local churchyard or burial ground?

Examples of activities include:

For families: A quiz, a treasure hunt, a mini beast safari, tree bingo, letter or leaf rubbing, making gargoyles out of clay…

Open days: guided tours, slide talks, tower tours...

Volunteer activities: making compost areas, scything the grass, repairing the boundary walls, memorial recording, bramble clearing, nest box making, path clearing…

Workshops: dry stone walling, memorial safety and care, plant identification, animal identification, dawn chorus, geology, tree care, archaeology, creative writing, art, singing…

Please visit Conservation Advice/Advice Sheets for Download section on this website if you feel the following information may be useful:

To tell the story of these burial grounds is to tell the story of Southwark, its churches and hospitals, and the people who lived and died there - rich, poor, and everyone in between. St Lawrence's Church, Sheffield

Event: Tinsley Graveyard Survey

Date of event: Saturday 10th June 2017

Time of event: 10am - 2pm

Event: St Lawrence Church is one of very few historic buildings left in Tinsley, which has been a settlement since before the Norman Conquest. The current church was built in 1879 but its on the site of at least one earlier church. There is a possibility of this site being a place for people to come together since Saxon times or earlier.

Volunteers have been surveying the graveyards of St Lawrence Church. Many of which pre-date the current church building.

Come along and explore this fascinating and understudied corner of Sheffield’s past. There will also be opportunities to record some of the gravestones and contribute to our survey.

This is a free event and refreshments will be available in the Vestry.

Is pre-booking necessary? Participants can turn up on the day, but it would be helpful to contact us first so we can provide sufficient refreshments. Contact Charlotte Head 0114 2580483 or email [email protected]
