Work Away The Winter Blues!

11th January 2010

If you are fed up of sitting indoors and need some gentle exercise in good company why not join the Churchyard Task Team, run by the churchyard conservation charity, Caring for God's Acre?

The new winter programme giving details of the Tuesday task days is now available from the office or on the website (www.caringforgodsacre.org). The days are a variety of different conservation tasks around churchyards in Herefordshire and South Shropshire with activities including tree management, bramble clearance, making seating areas and wildlife corners. Learning new practical skills and wildlife identification is part of every task, but there are also workshops on Frogs, Toads and Newts, their ecology and conservation, and Building a Rustic Seat from coppice wood.

“Many of the churchyards which we work in are very valuable habitats to a variety of species, now rarely found in the wider countryside, such as meadow ants, slow-worms, hedgehogs, owls and many plants. The ancient yew trees, walls and gravestones tell a story of the local communities and the history of the church itself” said Volunteer Co-ordinator, Hilary Smith. “ They are fascinating places to work, and make for a very peaceful and interesting day out.”

We particularly welcome volunteers from the local area to the churchyard where we are working, along with individuals of all ages and abilities.   So if you are young or old, unemployed, retired, work part-time, recovering from illness, male or female, and in need of gentle exercise doing a very worthwhile job for nature and heritage conservation, do get in touch to find out more. Contact Hilary Smith, Caring for God's Acre on 01568 611154, email info@cfga.fsnet.co.uk
