'Abbots, Barons and Trees'
'Abbots Barons and Trees' is the title of an illustrated talk to be given by Dr lan Dormor on the evening of Thursday 25th February at the Ludlow Conference Centre. The talk, which is free of charge, will explain how the woodlands of the Yorkshire Dales were managed by the Cistercians of Fountains Abbey and their lordly neighbours. Whilst researching for a PhD, lan Dormor gained insight into the mind of the medieval woodman - both religious and secular. The talk will explore the tangible link between present day woodland character and past management. Dr lan Dormor, a landscape historian and the Landscape Officer for the Shropshire Hills AONB said: "During the Middle Ages wood was the second most important commodity after food. Trees provided the fuel and raw materials that powered the medieval economy. Nowadays, dependence upon fossil fuels cannot be guaranteed and wood is set to become the fuel of the future. In this respect, there are lessons to be learned from the ways in which the monks of Fountains Abbey managed their woodlands 600 years ago."
The talk follows a short Annual General Meeting of the conservation charity Caring for God's Acre. Refreshments will be served after the talk, which is open to all. Just phone or email Caring for God's Acre to book a place. Phone 01568 611154 or email info@cfaa.fsnet.co.uk
