This year’s AGM will be held on Tuesday the 9th of November at 7pm. The official business will be followed by a virtual cemetery tour with City of Westminster Guide and founder of the Cemetery Club, Sheldon K. Goodman. Sheldon is a fabulous heritage communicator whose passion focuses on the people of long ago, our changing landscape and what went on before us.
Sheldon’s Talk, ‘The Original Garden Cemetery’ focuses on the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, in Paris, often considered the finest cemetery on earth. And with good reason. Jim Morrison, Sarah Bernhardt, Ellen Gray and more rest in this beautiful City of the Dead.
So join us as Sheldon takes us around what’s often considered the template for the likes of Highgate, Mount Auburn and La Recoleta cemeteries to explore some wonderful social history, tombs and monuments.
Booking is now available via Eventbrite here and is free for members, £5 for non-members.
Thank you to everyone who attended last year’s AGM. We hope you enjoyed the talk, given by Professor Harold Mytum as much as we did! For those of you who couldn’t attend it was on “Graveyard memorials -an under-appreciated heritage“. Harold is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Liverpool; he is a leading expert on the study of graveyard memorials and author of several books and numerous articles. Graveyards across the UK contain a treasure trove of memorials erected over the past three centuries. Through their shapes and designs, as well as their inscriptions, they reveal an enduring record of individuals, social and religious beliefs, and of family and local history.
