Year of the Burial Ground

2020 will be the 20th Anniversary of Caring for God’s Acre and we are celebrating with a ‘Year of the Burial Ground’.
During the year we will be partnering with experts and organisations to raise the profile and celebrate the unique heritage within these special sites.

There will be many ways of becoming involved:

BBG conference posterAttend one of our conferences

We have organised two ‘Beautiful Burial Ground’ conferences. These days will bring together experts for a packed itinerary – inspiring attendees to investigate and record in burial grounds and show how records can be used to help with management decisions and interpretation.
Join us to find out how to create a haven for wildlife, heritage and people.

The conference dates are:
Thursday March 12th National Museum, Cardiff (2020) – view slides and listen to talks here
The Circle, Sheffield – postponed until spring (2021)

Join our Photographic celebration

Every month we will have a theme to celebrate the treasures to be found in burial grounds. Simply tag us in any photos via facebook or twitter or send an e-mail to, along with the name of the site and your name. At the end of the month we will select some and create a photo carousel which we will post on social media and on this website.

The carousels created so far can be seen on this page.

For January the theme was ‘Lichen and Snowdrops’.

Carvings and crocuses february 20February’s theme was ‘Carvings and Crocuses’

March’s theme – ‘Primroses and Preaching Crosses.’

April’s theme – ‘Buds and Blossom’.

May’s theme – ‘Birds and Bluebells.’

Please send us your photos or tag us on social media and we will make the photos into a carousel at the end of the month. #beautifulburialgrounds
